Sealy News earns awards

The Sealy News earned a host of awards from the 2019-2020 Better Newspaper Contest at the Texas Press Association’s 141st convention in Denton over the weekend. Nine recognitions were earned, including five first-place plaques and second place in the overall sweepstakes in its circulation division among Texas weeklies.

Clayton Fritsch, a member of Sealy High School’s Class of 2017 and current redshirt junior at Sam Houston State, took fourth place in the pole vault competition at the NCAA Outdoor National Championship meet in Oregon June 9. The top-eight finish secured his fourth All-American honor in his fifth national championship meet on the collegiate circuit.

Marik named Sealy’s head baseball coach

Thursday, Trey Marik was announced as the next head baseball coach of the Sealy Tigers. Dane Bennett, who served as head coach the previous four seasons, will be remaining on staff.

Marik, a member of Bellville High School’s Class of 1988, most recently coached the Somerville Yeguas and made previous coaching stops in Columbus and Brenham. Somerville had gone winless in multiple seasons before Marik’s stint and in 2021, the Yeguas secured a playoff position as the fourth-place team in District 26-2A.

Sealy ISD assesses water damage

The Sealy ISD Board of Trustees held an emergency meeting Monday at noon in the junior high school cafeteria to assess water damages from recent storms. Project Manager Mike Zapalac explained the junior high and administration building had more than an inch of water infiltrate the building Saturday night and Cotton Global Disaster Solutions had been on campus doing work nonstop since Sunday at 2 a.m.

TVC awards FVA grants

May 13, the Texas Veterans Commission (TVC) awarded $33,430,000 in Fund for Veterans’ Assistance (FVA) grants to 147 organizations throughout the state. This is the highest number of grants and funding awarded in the 11-year history of the Fund for Veterans’ Assistance grant program. In the Gulf Coast region, 30 organizations were awarded grants, listed below. Additionally, 12 organizations awarded provide services statewide.
