Willie P. Zapalac was born in Wallis, Texas on June 3, 1925, to John and Rosa Zapalac. He went to school in Sealy and served his country in the United States Air Force as a medic during World War II. After the war, he met and married the love of his life, Edith (Edi) Vecera and they wed at the Holy Cross Catholic Church in East Bernard on February 22, 1949. Willie P. and Edi were married for over 70 years and had two children, Danny and Yvonne. Together with their children, they made their home in Sealy and were members of the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church.
After retirement from Hudson Products Corporation in Beasley, Texas, Willie P. spent his time raising cattle and farming. His favorite pastime was sitting in a lawn chair under his carport watching over his cows and keeping track of the activity down Stockold Road. He adored his three granddaughters and especially enjoyed the antics of his ten great-grandchildren. Known for his cowboy hat, sly smile and twinkle in his eye, Willie P. loved a good conversation and had a knack for telling it like it is.
His barbeque was the stuff of legend and he passed that celebrated skill on to his son, Danny. He enjoyed long domino games, but hated to lose. He always looked forward to casino bus trips and would drive many miles for an opportunity to play bingo. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus, American Legion and KJT and spent countless hours during his lifetime volunteering for these organizations.
