Vet among many locals to be honored this month

Veterans Day is just around the corner and many local residents say they want to use the opportunity to connect with their comrades.

Kenneth Currens, a U.S. Navy veteran and former mayor of San Felipe, recently stopped by The Sealy News to show off his medals, which include honors for occupation service, Asiatic Pacific Campaign, World War II, China service, American campaign and Asia.

“I joined the Navy because I had never been 20 miles from where I was from,” Currens told a Sealy News reporter earlier this year. “Like everyone I heard about the big battle ships sinking at Pearl Harbor, so that was more reason to join.”

Currens has said that if any locals belong to the Shellback Society, he’d like them to reach out.

A Veterans Day Celebration is planned for 10 a.m. Friday, Nov. 10, at the Sealy High School Gym. The event will honor veterans, those currently serving in the military and community members.
