The Sealy High School track and field team split into two parts last week with the varsity boys’ 4x100 relay team and senior jumper Tyrek McNeese traveling to Austin to compete in the Texas Relays over the weekend and the rest of the team competing at Royal High School last Thursday.

In Austin, the 4x100 team ran against 49 other schools and finished fourth with a time of 43.22. The team made up of Joshua McDaniel, Kevon Kesee, Tyrek McNeese and Matthew Lord finished just behind Stafford by a little over a 10th of a second.

McNeese also competed in the triple jump on Saturday and finished first with a jump of 49 feet 9 inches. It was nearly 2 feet longer than the second-place finisher who jumped 48 feet. His jump set a new record for Sealy High School, a similar feat to his record-setting performance at Bellville on March 22. There, McNeese broke the school record for the long jump with his distance of 22 feet 10 inches.

McNeese said he surprised even himself with setting the record in the long jump.

“I mainly focus on the triple jump so that surprised me that I was able to do that but being able to do so is such a great feeling and just wants me to work harder to make sure no one else beats it,” he said. “The goal is always to get better every week so it’s making me work hard but I have to keep trying to be better.”

The senior also said one of his main motivations is his finish at the state meet last year in which he lost first place by only 3 inches in the triple jump.

“I thought I had it at the end but it just wasn’t meant to be so my whole work this season is to earn those inches,” McNeese said. “Ultimately I just want to make my family really proud of me and do my absolute best out there.”

Back in Austin County, the rest of the junior varsity and varsity track and field team traveled to Brookshire to compete in the Royal Relays on Thursday.

On the boys’ side, first place finishers were Luke Thielemann in discus, Ivan Bolden in triple and long jump, Jesus Barroso in the 800-meter and in the 1,600-meter. Second-place finishers were the relay team in the 800-meter, Vladimir Hernandez in the 3,200, Parker in the 300-meter hurdle, Keen Brown in the 800-meter and Reece Novicke in the 110-meter hurdle. Third-place finishers were Joseph Clay in shot put, Noe Navarro in triple jump, Parker in the 110-meter hurdle, Montoya in the 800-meter and Reece Novicke in 300-meter hurdle.

On the girls’ side, first place finishers were Jayme Kana in discus, Marlieza Dickens in triple jump and the 110-meter hurdle, Allyson Dickens in the high jump, Rayann Rabius in the 400-meter and the relay team for the 1,600-meter race. Second-place finishers were Williams in the long

jump, Madison Klotz in the 400-meter, Reagan Newsome in the 300-meter hurdle and Zoee Jeffrey in the 200-meter dash. Third-place finishers were Kathryn Moore in the triple jump, Newsome in the 100-meter hurdle, Dickens in the 800-meter and Williams in the 300-meter hurdle.

The team’s next competition will be the district track meet in Sealy on April 11 and 12.
