Tiger tennis earns five medals from Wharton

The Sealy team tennis squad traveled to Wharton last Friday for another tournament and had representatives medal in each division they competed in.

Head coach Joni Baxley had a boys’ singles player and a girls’ and boys’ doubles pairing in the A division take first in the consolation bracket. In the B division, a boys’ doubles pairing took second overall and another boys’ singles player won the consolation bracket to bring plenty of hardware back to Sealy.

Macey Feland and Rebecca Kins were Sealy’s girls’ doubles representatives in the A division and they dropped their first match 6-2, 6-2 to a Wharton pairing. They were able to bounce back, however, and beat Waller 6-4, 6-3, before beating Lamar 6-3, 6-3 to claim the consolation ladder.

Austin Keeton and J.T. Rassette took a similar route in the boys’ doubles bracket, losing their opening match to Wharton 7-6 (10-8), 6-3 in the A division. After that, they registered wins over Lamar 6-2, 6-4 and Calhoun 6-2, 6-4 to claim their medal.

Jonah DeLozier continued his tour on the singles circuit and similarly took the top spot in the consolation bracket out of Division A after falling in his initial match to Lamar 4-6, 7-6 (10-8). He benefited from a bye in the next round to rest up for the Waller opponent in the consolation finals where DeLozier took the match in a marathon match 6-3, 3-6 (13-11).

In the B division, Carlos Godoy and Brendon Beckendorff rattled off two wins to start, first over Bellville’s #1 boys’ doubles pairing 7-6 (4), 6-4 and then Lamar 6-2, 6-3. They met a pairing from host Wharton who took the decision on their home court, 6-1, 6-4.

Eric Wilson competed in the boys’ singles matches in the B division and took home a consolation championship, battling back from a tournament-opening loss to Waller 7-5, 3-6, 10-5. Wilson went on to beat Lamar 6-3, 3-6, 10-5 before taking down Bellville 6-2, 6-4 to win another medal for the black and gold.

These results came after a similarly successful outing at the Brazosport Exporter Invitational on Jan. 31. Godoy and Beckendorff took first from the consolation draw in boys’ doubles where Rassette and Keeton took third overall in the same competition, Feland and Kins won B division’s girls’ doubles and Wilson earned fourth in boys’ singles.

Sealy tennis hits the court again this Friday at the Lamar Consolidated Tournament hosted by George Ranch High School.
