In their second meet of the season, the Sealy boys’ powerlifting team took home second place in the team competition in their division at the Edna Invitational last Saturday.
Leading the way for the Tigers were third-place overall finishes from Max Wickens (114-pound class) and Deionte Cooper (275-pound class), adding six points to the Tigers’ team total.
Not only that, but three others earned fourth in their weight class to push Sealy’s team score higher; Juan Perez (123-pound class), Leo Casique (165-pound class) and Eric Burns (220-pound class).
To round out the team score were two fifth-place finishes to score another point each courtesy of Dylan Thaxton (132-pound class) and Jonathan Monterroza (181-pound class).
When it was all said and done, the Tiger strength squad pulled 8,745 pounds last week with Burns (1,055-pound total) and Cooper (1,090-pound total) doing the heaviest lifting for the team.
After two meets, Sealy has three representatives in the top 10 in Region 2 and three more in the top 15; Thaxton with an 875-pound total is third in 132, Wickens’ 445-pound total ranks sixth in 114, Weslee Novosad’s 755-pound total checks in at 10th in 132, Alvin Nunn and his 1,145-pound total makes him 11th in 220 and Perez debuted at 13th at 123 with a total of 615 last week.
The Tigers will be off this week and will hit the weights for real again next Thursday, Feb. 6, at the Swamp Strength Invitational at Rice Consolidated High School in Altair. The last day to qualify for regionals will be later that month, Feb. 29.
