The Sealy Tiger tennis team traveled to Wharton last week where a slew of athletes in black and gold gobbled up spots atop the rankings.

Carlos Godoy and Macey Feland took home a mixed-doubles title despite dropping a quarterfinal matchup against a couple of Tigers from host Wharton.

Godoy and Feland bounced back with a 6-3, 6-2 win over Brazos to clinch a spot in the finals against East Bernard’s second pairing.

The championship was a back-and-forth battle that needed a couple of extra sets. The first one went in favor of Sealy, 6-2, and the Brahmas took the second set by a similar 6-2 score. However, the super tiebreaker went the Tigers’ way, 10-3, to clinch a championship.

Three more groups nearly followed their teammates to the top spot but fell just shy, still earning second-place finishes.

Two of the girls’ singles players in Kylie Patrick and Rachel Faldyn took second place in the A and B Division respectively.

Patrick started out with wins over Wharton and East Bernard, 6-4, 6-3 and 6-4, 6-4, to earn the right to play Brazos’ No. 1 in the finals. The Lady Cougar won in straight sets, though, 6-2, 6-1.

Faldyn stumbled out of the gates with a loss to East Bernard’s top player, 6-4, 6-3 but bounced right back, defeating Bay City’s No. 1, 6-0, 6-2. That set up a final matchup with the hosting Wharton’s No. 1 singles player where the hometown Tiger took a 6-2, 6-2 decision for the top spot.

A boys’ doubles pairing of Brendan Beckendorff and Austin Keeton similarly fell to Wharton in the finals, finishing with a second-place position. Sealy started off by taking a 7-5, 6-3 match over East Bernard and a 6-2, 4-6 (10-6) decision over Bay City’s top pairing to crack the finals. There, however, the host Tigers took the championship by scores of 6-3, 6-4.

The other boys’ doubles pairing in Jonah DeLozier and J.T. Rassette took down Bay City’s No. 1 pairing to take third in the tournament. The pair beat Brazos, 6-4, 3-6 (10-5) before falling to the eventual champion Wharton, 6-1, 6-1. In their last match of the day, DeLozier/Rassette persevered over the Blackcats, 6-2, 6-3 to steal third place.

The lone boys’ singles player, Eric Wilson, also took home a third-place spot, salvaging a win over Bay City to do so. Wilson started out with losses to Wharton (7-5, 6-4) and Brazos (6-2, 6-3) but earned a win over the Blackcat’s No. 1 singles player by scores of 6-2, 6-1 to come away near the top.

Similarly, the only girls’ doubles pairing present, Abigail Zientek and Alexis Horelica, finished in third in their division, beating both of Bay City’s pairings. The Lady Tigers took a long quarterfinals matchup over the No. 2 Blackcat pairing, 5-7, 7-6 (6-4) (Super Tiebreaker 10-7), before falling to Brazos, 6-4, 6-4.

That set Sealy up with a third-place meeting with Bay City’s No. 1 pairing and the Lady Tigers came out on top, 7-5, 6-0 to secure bronze.

In other girls’ singles matchups, Tarena DeMenck fell to East Bernard, 6-2, 6-2, Wharton 6-2, 6-3, and Bay City, 6-2, 6-3 to finish fourth overall on the afternoon.

Rebecca Kins and Justin Gajewski represented another mixed doubles pairing but lost to Wharton, 6-3, 6-3 and East Bernard, 7-5, 3-6 (10-8) to wrap up the action.

This week, the Sealy tennis squad will enjoy a week off for Spring Break and will return to action the following Friday for another match at Wharton.
