Bellville baseball and softball

The Bellville Brahmas’ varsity baseball team have continued to strengthen their place in the district after beating Sealy last week. Their 5-2 win extended their win streak in district play to three straight games and completed their season sweep over their rivals. Kyle Collins was on the mound for the Brahmas against Sealy and was a large reason for their win. He allowed a run in the first inning but quickly recovered and didn’t allow a hit again until the sixth. He was one out away from pitching a complete game. Bellville has a district record of 3-1 and remains a favorite to win the district.

Since starting district play with a 2-0 record, the Lady Brahmas’ softball team has stumbled as the final stretch of the season looms near. They lost on the road against Needville by a run but made up for it when they won their next game against Columbus 4-2. Unfortunately, they couldn’t create another streak as they continued their road game stretch against Sealy. Bellville gave up one run in the first inning but fell apart in the second, allowing the Lady Tigers to put up 13 runs in the second. After failing to capitalize on having two runners on with two outs, Sealy scored another run to end the game in just three innings. Their next game is on Friday on the road against Stafford.

Bellville soccer

The Bellville girls’ soccer team is just two wins away from competing for a state title. Their opportunity comes after narrowly beating Brazosport in the quarterfinals 3-2. The two goals were the first they allowed in the playoffs and also the only time they scored less than five goals. Their offense was still productive as their two first-half goals still put them over the top. Their next game will be on Friday against Jasper and should they win that game, they would play the winner of Lorena and Columbia.

Blinn softball

Meghan Morris pitched a shutout and Calli Birch drove in two runs as the Blinn College softball team defeated Laredo Community College 6-0 in the opening game of Sunday’s doubleheader at Hohlt Park.

Laredo picked up an 8-5 victory to conclude the doubleheader and split the pair. With the split, the Buccaneers move to 23-13 overall and 12-4 in Region XIV Conference play.

Morris used an impressive pitching performance to help lead the Buccaneers to a 6-0 victory in the doubleheader opener.

She pitched a seven-inning shutout and only surrendered six hits on two strikes.

Birch led the Buccaneers with two RBIs after she went 2-for-3. Tori Alvarez-Lopez, Amy Alexander and Abby Olejniczak each drove in one run in the victory.

In the next game, Laredo was able to grab an early lead over Blinn and hold it for an 8-5 victory to close out the doubleheader.

Courtney Ogle led the Buccaneers with two RBIs, while Villarreal followed with one. Blinn totaled 10 hits as Gabriela Gomez, Ogle and Villarreal led the offense with two each.

Next, Blinn will travel to Lamar State College-Port Arthur for a conference doubleheader on Friday
