Skate Texas holds grand opening

It's a near-universal dream for someone to take their passion and turn it into a living and for one couple, that dream officially became a reality last week.

Joey and Dara Broussard opened their new business Skate Texas on Friday with a grand opening celebration.

Skate Texas is a skating rink in the outlet center near Blinn College’s Sealy campus. It opened last week after nearly six months of preparation. Dara Broussard will handle the day-to-day operations for the rink while her husband will be helping on nights and weekends.

“Joey grew up skating and did speed skating competitions and has been doing it his whole life and we were always looking for a place to start our own rink and we found this place,” Broussard said.

They signed the lease for the building in early November and began renovating shortly thereafter. Broussard said the hardest part about putting together the rink was having the patience through the challenges.

“We had electrical problems and roof leaks and had to take down some walls because the building is so old and so having the patience was the most difficult thing for sure,” she said. “We’re very proud and pleased with how it turned out because it all started out on paper and now it’s here in front of us.”

Skate Texas is employing 15 high school students who will be working part-time. Dara Broussard said the ability to teach youth valuable lessons is another privilege of running the business.

“For a lot of them this is their first job so they learn how to sweep and mop and show up on time and learn how to work hard is special for us as well,” Broussard said.

The business owner added that she is proud to be part of helping her husband’s life dream become reality.

“I’m just happy for my husband because this is what he’s always wanted to do and his dad passed away a few years ago and they’ve been in the roller skating business since Joey was born. I know his dad would be really proud of him for doing this,” she said.
