SHS Students attend German Career Day at the German Consulate General

SHS advanced German students attended "German Career Day" at the German Consulate General in Houston on April 27.

Students gained a global perspective on future careers and educational opportunities for those individuals with German language skills.

The Career Day Event featured presentations from various German universities. Public colleges in Germany are free for residents and international students. That means that a student from Sealy High School could take advantage of free tuition at a German university. Past Sealy graduates have taken advantage of educational opportunities in Germany and several have done internships in Germany. Some German colleges are going out of their way to attract foreigners by even offering programs taught entirely in English.

DAAD – Deutscher Akademischer Austausch Dienst (German Academic Exchange Service) DAAD is the world’s largest funding organization dedicated to promoting international exchange in higher education. DAAD provides young people with the opportunity to gain international academic and research experience in Germany as well as worldwide. It is similar to the American Fulbright Scholarship which offers an all-expense-paid opportunity to study in Germany. Highly-motivated Sealy graduates should definitely look into these opportunities.

A number of Texas universities presented their German and international programs as well. Rice University, Texas A&M University, Sam Houston State University, Texas State University and the University of Houston were represented. The British International School of Houston, a college preparatory day school located in Katy, was also represented.

German companies and institutions were looking for interns, apprentices, and some were even offering jobs. Among those represented were Airbus DS Space Systems, BASF, BMW, Hapag-Lloyd, Siemens, Headworks International, Jungheinrich Forklift Truck Corp, Texas German Autohaus, as well as the German American Chamber of Commerce, the Katy Economic Development District, the U.S. Department of Labor and Workforce Solutions.

This event gave Sealy German students the opportunity to see value in the studies of the German language. Germany is a leading economic force in today's global economy. Sealy ISD offers four levels of German beginning in junior high and continuing on into high school through German IV AP.
