For the first time since 2015, a Sealy junior high football team has won the district championship. The seventh-grade A team defeated West Brazos 37-6 to finish their season with a perfect 6-0 record and the district championship.
The win was largely thanks to Damyrion Phillps , D`vonne Hmielewski, Parker Deberry and A'vonte Nunn who all scored at least one touchdown. Mason Klotz, Lucas Zapalac, William Forester and Jerson Uriostegui were the leaders on the defensive side of the ball which held West Brazos to just six points.
Offensive coordinator Austin Kilman said it was the familial atmosphere around the team that helped the Tigers win the district.
“Our key phrase this year was ‘Family’. I think this team really believed that we were a family and enjoyed playing with each other,” Kilman said. “Also, being very fast, intelligent, and tough helps. This group has a lot going for them.”
Kline said Phillps, Hmielewski and Klotz were consistent players on and off the field for the team and filled their roles as team captains well. The coach praised his team’s mental fortitude as a whole as well.
“The trust and confidence they have in their teammates, their coaches, and themselves was key this year,” Kilman said. “Also, this group is one the smartest I've coached and are growing leaders in the classroom.”
As for the future of the team and their potential success on and off the field, Kilman only said that they all have the potential for great success.
