Sealy ER closes; urgent care opens

After more than three years of offering emergency room services at Sealy ER, Dr. Kannappan Krishnaswamy – affectionately known in the community as “Dr. K.” – is switching gears and opening an urgent care facility.

Sealy ER closed Sept. 1.

“With changes to Blue Cross/Blue Shield, it was no longer effective,” Krishnaswamy said. “Due to the cutbacks and red tape with Blue Cross and Blue Shield and not being able to accept Medicare and Medicaid, the ER is not financially feasible any longer.”

The urgent care facility will have extended hours seven days a week.

“The ER was a good product. It was just not useable due to the issues with insurance changes” Dr. K. said.

As of Sept. 1 they will no longer accept any major trauma patients.

For the urgent care and to continue to support the community, they will be adding a new doctor, Dr. Avinash Narine, to assist with the extended urgent care hours of 7 a.m. to 9 p.m.

“We want to be able to serve more of the population,” Dr. K said. “Urgent care is more affordable and there is less wait time. You can come in without an appointment.”

Dr. K opened Sealy ER three years ago March 15.
