Sealy, Brazos volleyball split recent action


Both the Lady Tigers and Cougarettes went 1-1 last week with Sealy’s games coming on the road.

Brazos hosted Columbus and traveled to Anderson-Shiro and earned its victory away from home. Coach Denyse Fernandez’ squad racked up 67 kills, 11 aces and 127 digs over their nine sets.

Kim Boyd and the Tigers started off slow dropping their first set to the East Bernard Brahmarettes last Tuesday but bounced back to secure the win. On Friday they traveled to face the Kempner Cougars although they fell in straight sets.

Sophomore Brylie Nedd and junior Zoee Jeffrey again teamed up to lead the offense, spiking down 14 and 12 kills respectively despite their height difference. Freshman Breanna Brandes led the team with 25 assists, 26 digs, and four service aces and also contributed two blocks.

Senior classmates Diari Dabney (6 digs, ace, block) and Makaylah Scott (11 assists) helped the Tigers bounce back from the early setback.

25-16, 27-25, 25-18 Kempner

Jeffrey took the lead and racked up nine kills and added a pair of blocks as well. Dabney made three blocks and a service ace and Tiger of the Week, senior Faith Haugen led the team with four aces.

Classmate Kendall Dornak and junior Raegan Newsome ended the match with a team-high 17 digs and Brandes’ 17 assists were another team-high.

The 1-1 split moves the Tigers’ overall record to 16-12 nearing the end of the non-district portion of their schedule. Wharton comes to town this Friday to open up play within the district and Sealy will also honor the high school staff with Teacher Appreciation Night starting at 5 p.m. in the gym.
