The Brazos Cougars hit the road last Friday to the San Antonio area for their non-district finale against the Randolph Ro-Hawks.
The hosts scored 27 unanswered points in the first quarter and added 28 unanswered third-quarter points to claim a 62-14 win to drop Brazos to 1-3.
The Cougars scored in the second and fourth quarters on the ground, with Elijah Johnson ripping off a 28-yard run and Angel Garcia pounding in a 3-yard rush on fourth and goal. Quarterback Jared Demny supplied some downfield connections through the air, but it wasn’t enough to topple Randolph.
Brazos moves to the district portion of its schedule this week with a matchup against the East Bernard Brahmas, who needed extra time to determine last week’s winner with the Shiner Comanches, “Dave Campbell’s” No. 1 team in the state in Class 2A Division 1. A late Shiner score gave it a 13-7 lead to retain the top rank and drop East Bernard two spots to No. 5 in Class 3A Division 2 with a 3-1 record.
The Brahmas allowed only 54 points against in non-district play, one more point than the Cougars scored in their first four games while allowing 153 points against. Similarly, East Bernard scored a total of 127 points in four non-district contests.
