For the first time in three weeks, the Brazos Cougars scored multiple touchdowns but it was still not quite enough to defeat the Rice Raiders at their place.
The hosts took hold to a 17-0 lead after the first half of play but the Cougars came out and drove from their own 28-yard line all the way down to the goal line where Jaylin Vela took control and ended the scoring drive with a quarterback sneak as well as supplied the two-point conversion to cut the deficit.
A fumble recovery in the end zone for Rice put the hosts’ advantage back to 24-8 and on the ensuing Brazos drive, another fumble turned the ball over only for the Raiders to turn that into points as well, pushing the score to 31-7.
The Cougars didn’t stop, however, and with Jared Demny under center, he let the ball fly and hooked up with Vela for a couple of big connections, one of which covered 58 yards to pay dirt although the ensuing point-after try failed.
Rice scored once more in the final quarter of play to make the final score 38-14 and drop Brazos to 1-4 overall with one more non-district game this week against Louise.
The Cougars’ 14 points last week was their most since the week-one, 53-52 loss at the hands of Fort Bend Christian Academy.
