Raymond Thomas Wachel “Pops”

Raymond Thomas Wachel, “Pops,” 91, of Katy, Texas, joined his heavenly family on Sunday, Oct. 25, 2020.

Ray was born on July 30, 1929, in Bremond, Texas, to Joe and Josephine Wachel. He proudly served his country and honorably discharged after 25 years of active duty service from the USAF.

He and his wife Gladys built a home in Katy in 1970 where they raised their two children: Dolores Rustin-Turnbow and Steven Wachel.

He was a hardworking, independent, and quick-witted man. His knowledge, honesty, and unbothered nature led to many life successes. He raised and supported his family as a well-respected businessman and was a member of St. Mary’s Church of Frydek, Texas, and the Knights of Columbus.

He enjoyed the outdoors, fishing, gardening, and a good game of dominoes or cards. He had a natural green thumb, growing vegetables and fruit to gift for so many to enjoy. He enjoyed “sunning” (as he would say) in his garage, visiting with friends and family. Ray’s garage was a place where some of the best tall tales could be told, especially on Thursdays. Snappy’s Café is where “Pops” could be found catching up with friends who became family. Pops became a second father and grandfather to so many people with his often-unsolicited advice and lovable personality. He enjoyed fine scotch, food, and conversation in his leisure time.

Ray touched the lives of so many people around him and is remembered as a loving husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and friend. A man with such distinctive character will never be forgotten.

Survivors include his daughter, Dolores Rustin-Turnbow, his son, Steven Wachel and wife Pattie, and his many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Funeral Mass will be celebrated at noon, Friday, Oct. 30, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Frydek. Burial will follow at St. Mary’s Catholic Church Cemetery.
