Major League Baseball continues to pull players from the Constellation Energy League, as last week left-hander Matt Dermody got the call to join the Chicago Cubs.
He became the sixth player from the four-team league hosted by the Sugar Land Skeeters to get the call to the big show in this pandemic-shortened season.
Dermody joins right-hander Chase De Jong and reliver Fernando Rodney, who went to the Houston Astros, right-hander Brett Eibner, taken by the Miami Marlins, catcher Brett Sullivan, who was recalled to the Tampa Bay Rays, and catcher Cameron Rupp who returned to the Cleveland Indians.
Dermody, 30, went 1-0 with a 0.79 ERA through four appearances (three starts) for Team Skeeters. Dermody struck out 17 batters over 11 1/3 innings pitched, allowing just nine hits.
Dermody played with the Toronto Blue Jays from 2016-17, making 28 appearances (25 1/3 innings pitched). The Blue Jays selected Dermody in the 28th round of the 2013 MLB Draft out of the University of Iowa.

On the diamond
A six-run first inning including a grand slam from Tristan Gray helped Team Skeeters to a 6-5 victory over Texas in the final game of Sunday’s double header. In the previous game, Anthony Vasquez tossed a two-hit shutout for Eastern Reyes del Tigre for a 3-0 win over the Sugar Land Lightning Sloths.
On Saturday, Pat Ledet pitched five scoreless and hitless innings in the Sloth’s 4-3 win over the Skeeters. In the first game, solo homers from Evan Marzilli and Casey Gillaspie carried Reyes del Tigre to a 2-1 victory over Texas.
A power outage ended Friday night’s game in the eighth inning, but not before the Skeeters powered past Eastern 7-3. A two-run dinger from Zach Borenstein and a grand slam by Courtney Hawkins led the charge.
On Thursday, Dustin Peterson and Albert Cordero went yard and Hawkins’ hit a walk-off RBI single to give the Skeeters a 5-4 win over Texas.
Wednesday featured a pair of makeup games as Eastern downed the Skeeters 1-0 and Texas topped the Sloths 4-3 in a game decided by a home run derby.
The week began on Tuesday with Jamie Westbrook belting a homer to propel the Sloths 5-3 over Eastern.
