Sign to honor state champions

Posted

Years ago, Sealy Texas had a sign on Interstate 10, that told of four state championships, which brought great pride to its citizens. After years of wear and tear, the sign fell apart and was never replaced. This apathy really irritated my husband, T.J. Mills, and he always talked of getting a new sign.

When the YMCA folded, I decided to take the money I had left and use it to build a new sign. After getting Coach Billy Norris to agree to help, we contacted Sealy Superintendent Sheryl Moore. She and the school district agreed to work with us, but the sign had to be fully funded. We changed the location to the grass area between the football field and tennis courts. We then got Stephen Cryan and Clint Bollinger on board. This was a game changer for us.

They were able to get local businesses to donate materials and labor, so the project took off. Billy and I had to raise the money to make up the difference and last month, we had the complete amount. Ranch Country and Koy Concrete put in the foundation and Starbrite Electric donated the electric lights and wiring. Clint Bollinger has designed the complete project with the help of Stephen Cryan and Mike Zapalac. Apex Stone donated all the stone and AL&M donated the cinderblocks and building materials. Along with generous donations from citizens of Sealy, the “TIGER Wall of Honor” is in progress.

The memorial will honor ALL Sealy Tigers who have made it to the State Champion level. The individuals will each have a plaque recognizing their accomplishment and the date. All the original donors will be honored with a leveled plaque. Also, we will honor two legends, T.J. Mills and Eric Dickerson. Flying with the memorial wall will be the Texas flag, the U.S. flag, and the Gold Dot flag.

We are hoping this memorial will become a place Tigers can meet for pictures and that it will restore pride and honor for the great accomplishments made by the Sealy Tigers. We hope to dedicate this monument in May.

Donations for continued maintenance of the TIGER Wall of Honor can be made to Sealy ISD, 939 Tiger Lane, Sealy, Tx. 77474.
