Local athletes up for scholarship

Brazos' Gonzalez, Ressler; Sealy's Goad, Novicke in the running for Student-Athlete of the Year

Four local athletes are up for the 2020 Texas Student-Athlete of the Year Award, presented by 2Words Character Development.

Boy and girl representatives are chosen from each classification across the state and have the chance to win a $1,000 Letterman to Leader Scholarship and 18 weeks of 2Words Character Development Curriculum for their school to use in the spring of 2020.

Their website explained the scholarship by noting that they are looking to prepare current athletes for their careers off the playing field.

"When the Friday night lights shut off and students hang up their jerseys, we want them to be defined by their character, not by the points on the scoreboard. It’s crucial to be exposed to tools, practices, and foundational principles to build outstanding character," the scholarship tab says. "We want to recognize and encourage the kind of young women and men that will become the next generation of leaders. With this scholarship, we hope to remove barriers to success."

Representing Brazos High School at the Class 2A level are Allie Gonzalez (cross country, softball) and Kody Ressler (football, baseball).
