Following an intense competition that kicked off Jan. 23, musical duo Laz and Katie were selected by judges and fans to win a $1,000 cash prize and perform at Sealybration in July.
The inaugural Soundoff to Sealybration event was by all accounts a success, drawing large crowds to Saddleback Saloon every Wednesday night as competitors ranging from teenagers to seasoned artists sang their hearts out.
Soundoff was hosted each week by Sealy High School band director Rolando Cantu and judged by representatives from The Sealy News, Sealy Community Foundation and Saddleback Saloon.
“I want to thank everyone that made it a success,” Cantu said. “Thank you to all of the acts who came out and gave their all. We’ve seen a lot of you grow up on the stage and it’s amazing. And just thank you for giving me the opportunity to host something that is so very special.”
Laz and Katie covered crowd favorites from Johnny Cash and Credence Clearwater Revival during Saturday night’s show.
“We had some tough, incredible completion all the way through,” Katie Wilson said. “I am very thankful to get the opportunity to open for Tracy Byrd at Sealybration this year. We did it. Thank y’all for coming out to support us and we can’t wait to see you in July.”
Sealybration is a community event that raises funds for education and charity. In addition to the live music, the event offers a softball tournament, vendors, food trucks and more.
The Soundoff to Sealybration competition will likely be held again next year with some changes to the format.
“We have many things planned for the future,” Cantu said.
