A middle school teacher from Lamar Consolidated Independent School District in Rosenberg has been confirmed deceased after being found unconscious in his classroom Monday.
Jordan Halane, a fine arts teacher at Wessendorf Middle School, reportedly attempted suicide while the school day was in session but was not in an area where students regularly congregated at that time of day.
Another staff member found Halane passed out in his classroom alone and students were told to remain in their classrooms but eventually continued the day on an alternate bell schedule although not informed of the incident right away.
Their parents, however, received an email from Principal Sonya Sanzo soon after Halane was taken to Oak Bend Medical Center, where he later passed.
She wanted to make sure the parents knew what had happened while maintaining their concentration on students’ safety.
“Our focus is always on the safety and well-being of our students. We felt that you should be aware of the situation in case your child comes home with questions or concerns,” Sanzo’s email said.
She included there were no ulterior motives and that Halane's intent was to cause self-harm.
"There were no weapons on campus and students were never in any danger,” Sanzo added. “Students continued on a slightly modified schedule and were unaware of the medical response. Classes [were] dismissed at the end of the day to ensure all students had safe transportation and supervision available.”
