Lady Tigers win two in a row

The Sealy Lady Tiger basketball squad closed round one and opened round two of district play with the same thing: A home win.

After beating Stafford, 43-34, on Jan. 17, Sealy took down Needville 53-26 last Tuesday at home to continue inching its chair closer to the table for the playoff conversation within District 25-4A.

Evelyn Harrington led the way with a 10-point, 11-rebound double-double with Avery Oliver’s 10 points and four rebounds not far behind. All nine of Heaven Hernandez’s points came from behind the three-point arc and Eastlynn Cloud supplied seven points and pulled down eight rebounds

All of the Lady Tigers got in on the scoring efforts in a game that head coach Anthony Branch saw as another step in the right direction, with Megan Schaaf, Brylie Bond and Julia Jurecka all adding five points apiece and Kayla Camacho registering two.

“They’re bonding as a team, they’re figuring out how to play basketball together, they know what to do and they’re executing it,” he said after last Tuesday’s win. “They’re high-fiving each other, they’re having a good time so that’s probably the biggest thing that I enjoy watching.”

With the schedules flipping in the second round of district, the girls played the late game after the boys played and with the exit of the Tigers to the locker room, so too did many in the stands make their exit, missing out on an impressive performance from the Lady Tigers.

“The people that left missed the show. Heaven Hernandez is knocking down shots, Avery Oliver is kicking out the rebound, it was just a fun thing to watch,” Branch said. “Seeing Megan Schaaf get after it on the boards like she can, and then Evelyn Harrington playing within herself.”

Of course, he also knows time is running short on the season but with much of the roster being comprised of underclassmen, the coach will be returning many of the same faces next year.

“Every time we step on the floor, every time we practice or play it’s another chance to continue to get better from the previous day,” Branch said. “That’s kind of our motto is to try and get 1% better and enjoy it, enjoy the time you have and have fun.”
