Lady Tigers win first playoff match

After ending the regular season with a postseason warm-up match against East Bernard, the Sealy Lady Tigers volleyball team traveled to Columbus to take on the El Campo Lady Birds in their first playoff match of the postseason.

The Lady Tigers went into the match with a 25-12 record while the Lady Birds locked up second place in their district Oct. 28 to set both teams up for high playoff hopes. Head coach Kimberly Svien said the pressures of the playoff is something the seniors on the team were used to.

“Even the younger ones have been in playoff situations so they’re not too nervous but the seniors are definitely showing off their leadership abilities this time,” Svien said.

As has been the case for most of the season, the seniors led the way as the Lady Tigers swept El Campo in three sets. The first two sets were tight 25-19 and 25-22 victories but Sealy managed to pull away in the third set and won 25-16.

Seniors Madison Luther and Rayann Rabius both tied for the most kills on the match with 14 while fellow senior Molly Dittert led the team with 13 assists and five aces. Rabius also led the team with three blocks and junior Faith Haugen led with 17 digs.

Svien said she was particularly proud of the way the team served the ball.

“Our serving was significantly better than the last handful of matches so that was the big difference maker not giving the team a ton of points,” Svien said.

During the third set the Lady Tigers were up big but as El Campo began a small rally attempt, the players seemed relaxed and calm as they pulled away and eventually won the set.

“Just in general, if you’re not having fun playing the match then you’re going to screw up so I always tell them to find something to be happy about,” Svien said. “If you’re not happy then why are you playing?”

As Sealy moves to the Area round of the playoffs, they will be taking on the 36-5 Navarro Panthers on a date yet to be determined. Svien said as the team moves forward, she will have them focus on defense.

“I think they might’ve been thinking they’re always going to get the kill even though there could be a big block on the other side so we always have to think cover, cover, cover,” Svien said.
