It was a battle of the Faith Academies on the gridiron last week in Bellville with the Cougars making the trip from Victoria's Faith Academy to play Bellville's Faith Academy Knights.
Although the away team got on the board first, a 13-yard touchdown run from Maury Cano, with complementing point-after kick by Nathan Figueroa, grabbed the lead for the hosts at 8-7.
The next scores alternated between the teams although Figueroa was involved in all of them for the Knights.
After the Cougars scored and added a kick to end the first-quarter scoring, Figueroa opened the scoring for the second frame with a 56-yard connection with Roy Shepherd although that extra point failed to make it 15-14 Victoria.
Figueroa responded to another Cougar score with a 57-yard throw and catch to the other Shepherd, Kaleb, to cut the deficit to 23-20 although Victoria scored again before halftime for six more points.
To open the third quarter, Figueroa found Kaleb again, although this scoring play only covered 25 yards, to make the scoreboard operator flash 29-26 in favor of the Cougars who soon made it a 35-26 advantage.
The Figueroa-Shepherd connection was strong and that was exemplified by another touchdown throw from Nathan to Kaleb from 10 yards away to make it a three-point game with only 35 seconds remaining although the ensuing onside kick fell into the hands of the Victoria Faith Academy Cougars to seal a 35-32 win on the road.
Nathan Figueroa finished with 279 yards and four touchdowns through the air on offense and added nine tackles, a forced fumble and a fumble recovery on defense.
Kaleb Shepherd hauled in six catches for a total of 144 yards and three scores and registered five tackles on defense and similarly forced a fumble.
Bellville's Faith Academy Knights fall to 2-3 overall but retain a 1-0 record in district play with the Fayetteville County Panthers on the schedule next for another non-district contest, this one on the road.
