June Marie Sager Grigar was born June 22, 1920, and passed away peacefully in her sleep on March 29, 2020, at the age of 99. Her parents were Albert and Ella (Hinsch) Sager. She was raised in Orchard and graduated from Orchard High School. She was also a member of the national championship volleyball team.
June met the love of her life, Richard August Grigar, at a dance and they married on August 28, 1938, at Guardian Angel Catholic Church in Wallis. After they married, they moved to Houston and opened a grocery store with Richard’s brother, Rudy. Not long after, Richard was called to service in the United States Army. June traveled with Richard while he was in the States to Abilene, Texas; Pittsburg, California; and New Orleans, Louisiana. When Richard left to go overseas, June returned to Orchard to live with her parents. Once Richard was honorably discharged from the Army, they resumed their work at the grocery store in Houston. In 1948, they returned to Orchard and opened Dick’s Food Market in Wallis. In 1968, they retired and focused on the farm, yard, dancing, and their family. In addition, June and Richard played music with the Jolly Boys, Six Pals Band and later with the South Texas Band.
She was a faithful member of Guardian Angel Catholic Church and charter member of the Catholic Daughters of America. June will be remembered as a gracious, happy, loving person who always valued her time with her family. She also enjoyed cooking, mowing her lawn, playing the piano and organ, playing Parcheesi and cards, and playing and watching volleyball. Until the end, June could sit down at the piano and play a concert from memory--truly amazing.
June enjoyed playing cards with her friends at the United Methodist Church in Orchard and Guardian Angel Parrish Hall in Wallis.
The family would like to offer heartfelt thanks to longtime caregiver, Mickie Poliquin.
