Community picnic

The Austin County Rotary Club is hosting a community picnic from 4-9 p.m. on Aug. 2 at the Austin County Fairgrounds. The event features the Motown band Two Black Guys and will also have dancing, food, a dessert auction, a silent auction and more. Admission will be charged.

Sales tax holiday

Comptroller Glenn Hegar reminds shoppers they can save money on clothes and school supplies during the state’s sales tax holiday on Aug. 7-9. The law exempts sales tax on qualified items — such as clothing, footwear, school supplies, and backpacks — priced below $100, saving shoppers about $8 on every $100 they spend. The date of the sales tax holiday and list of tax-exempt items are set by the Texas Legislature.

Rainwater harvesting

Rainwater harvesting and turf management online training will be held Aug. 20 by the Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service’s Healthy Lawns and Healthy Waters Program for Austin and Washington counties.
