Joyce Olivia Evans, 92, of Sealy, Texas passed away peacefully on April 17, 2018 in San Antonio.
Born on June 12, 1925 to Dempsey and Ethelena Petty in Houston, Texas, Joyce was a 1942 graduate of John H. Reagan High School in Houston. She married her high school sweetheart Emmett “Tiny” Evans, Jr. the following year.
Joyce will be remembered for her love of life, which she joyfully dedicated to serving others through work, volunteering, as well as her contagious optimism and sense of humor. During World War II, Joyce worked repairing airplanes at Ellington Air Force Base, and throughout her life, she volunteered through church and other organizations.
At First United Methodist Church of Sealy, Joyce dedicated her time and energy to service and ministry programs such as Sealy Christian Food Pantry, Cuddles for Comfort, Hearts Touching Hearts, and sending coupons weekly for soldiers stationed abroad. She was an important part of many people’s support networks—friends, family, her congregation, community, and strangers alike.
Joyce enjoyed traveling, reading, and experiencing every bit of life she could. She made it known that she always had her bag packed, emblematic of how she lived life: always ready to see new places, try new desserts, and soak up what God gave her that day. Most of all, she loved spending time with her family and friends.
Joyce is preceded in death by her husband Emmett “Tiny” Evans. Joyce will be remembered by her son and daughter-in-law Tommy and Francine Evans; daughter and son-in-law Joanie and York Duncan; grandchildren Stacy and Randy Herron, Carey and Carl Kokemor, Garner and Amanda Duncan, Garrett and Sarah Duncan, Grant and Geoffrey Aldridge-Duncan, Matt Harris, Greg Harris; and great grandchildren Kinley and Emmy Kokemor, Connor and Keira Herron, Sawyer and Addison Duncan, Ruby and Charles York Duncan; many friends and members of her community.
