Journalist loses cancer battle

Chad Ferguson, editor and publisher of the Columbus Banner Press, lost his battle with cancer at age 65.

Ferguson began his newspaper career at age 12, working on a sports column with his father at The Brazosport Facts. In 1985 Ferguson joined his dad and a cousin in founding The Banner Press. He and his wife Rmaona later purchased the newspaper.

Ferguson released the following statement in August 2018:

“I want to take this opportunity to inform our loyal advertisers and readers, as well as my many friends and acquaintances throughout the tri-county area, about my current health situation. Several weeks ago, I was diagnosed with metastatic melanoma, an aggressive skin cancer, and since have been seeking the best medical care to help me fight this battle.”

Survivors include wife Ramona, sons Chris and wife Lina, daughter London and grandchildren Dylan, Hailey and Zoey.

Funeral arrangements for Ferguson, who served as Texas Press Association’s 134th president (2011-12), include:

Visitation: 5-7 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 9, and 1-2 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 10

Memorial service: 2 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 10
