Joe Gibson

Joe Gibson, formerly of Pasadena and Sealy, passed away on Nov. 1, 2020, in Buda, Texas. He was 91 years old.

Joe was born in Atmore, Ala., on Jan. 2, 1929, to Arminda Wilson Gibson and Roy C. Gibson. Both of his parents passed away when Joe was just an infant. He was raised by his maternal grandparents, Jonathon and Annie Wilson.

Joe’s grandfather, Jonathon, (also known as “Papa”) passed away when Joe was 12 years old and life was hard for Joe and his grandma in the post Great Depression era and World War II. Joe left school in his early teens and walked 40 miles to Pensacola, Fla., to look for work to help support him and Grandma. He was able to get a job on a “Liberty Ship” that was carrying much needed supplies to war torn Europe. It was a dangerous job due to un-exploded mines left over from the war and floating in the ocean and shipping lanes.

In later years, Joe resumed his merchant marine career and for about 30 years he sailed to ports all over the world, always returning to his wife, La Verne and son, Joe Charles. Joe served his country in every military conflict from World War II through 1994 by helping to transport military equipment into war zones. He retired in 1994. Joe loved to talk about the countries he saw and the people he met. He seldom met a stranger. It is safe to say that Joe enjoyed life.

In his retirement, Joe was very active in many organizations including the Knights of Columbus, church, American Legion and Masonic Order. He loved sports and enjoyed supporting high school football teams.

Joe is survived by his wife of 61 years, La Verne, his son, Joe Charles, and sister-in-law, Marjorie Crawford. He also leaves many cousins, nieces, nephews and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Roy and Arminda Gibson, grandparents Jonathon and Annie Wilson, mother and father-in-law, V.M. “Pet” Crawford, uncles, aunts and beloved cousins.

A memorial mass was celebrated at Santa Cruz Catholic Church, 1100 Main St., Buda, on Nov. 6.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Santa Cruz Catholic Church, PO Box 187, Buda, TX 78610 or to the charity of your choice.
