Jesse Ray Morton
A service was held for Mr. Jesse Ray Morton, Thursday, Aug. 10, 2017 at Church of Christ, Sealy, Texas. Mr. Larry Koenig conducted the service.
Jesse Ray Morton was born on May 22, 1931, to Horace and Pearl Crawford Morton in Etoile, Texas. They call him “Jess.” Jess grew up and attended school in Etoile, Texas.
Jess enlisted into the United Stated Air Force. After completing his duties, he moved to Sealy, Texas, where he met the love of his life Jewel Lafern Gebhardt. On Aug. 31, 1951 they were united into holy matrimony. To the union, they were blessed with one daughter, Brenda and a son, Ronald Ray.
Jess was an entrepreneur. He and Jewel purchased a 600-acre ranch in Chireno, Texas and they managed two hotels in Rockport and Uvalde, Texas. After returning to Sealy, Jess continued to work hard. He and Jewel owned and operated several businesses in Sealy, Texas. Two of the businesses were the heating and air condition, known as “Quality Air and Heating of Sealy and the other one that was known by everybody in Sealy and the surrounding areas was the “Tom’s Dairy Bar.” This was the place everyone went to buy the best hamburgers and Frito pies and the students went after school every day.
Jess loved his horses, cows, playing golf, going to Vegas with Bob Deffenbaugh playing Keno in Vegas and bowling. Bowling was his favorite sport. He belonged to the “Tom Dairy Bar bowling league” in Sealy where they would bowl at the “Sealy Bowling Palace.” Jess and his team won many state and national tournaments. They traveled all over the state and county.
He enjoyed spending time with his wife, daughter, granddaughter and great-granddaughters.
Jess is preceded in death by his parents, Horace William Morton and Pearl Crawford Mitchell, his loving wife, Jewel Morton one son, Ronald Ray Morton, step-father, Flavel Mitchell, two sisters, Avis Jousan, Thelma Jean Brady, two brothers, Freddy Morton, Ricky Morton; father-in-law and mother in-law, Charles R. Gebhardt and Gladys N. Gebhardt, sisters-in-law, Gladys Gebhardt Janczak, Bessie Gebhardt Kudlacek and Jean Gebhardt Koenig; brother-in-laws, Donald Jousan, Tom Lowery, Johnnie Janczak, Frank Kudlacek, Lawrence Koenig, Charles Gebhardt and Claude Gebhardt.
He is survived by his loving daughter, Brenda Jean Vacha, granddaughter, Jessica Jewel Martens, two great-granddaughters, Cierra LaRae Hines, Deavyn Mackinzy Hines, two sisters, Diane Morton Lowery, Vernell Morton Caldwell, two sister-in-laws, Alline Duvall, Rosellen Flagg, nieces, nephews and many family and friends. He will be truly missed.
