Full slate of events planned for October

There’s no shortage of things to do in Sealy and Austin County next month.

The month of activities kicks off with National Night Out, starting at 5 p.m. Oct. 7 at Abe & Ira Levine Family Park.

The gathering, hosted by the Sealy Police Department, is an opportunity for neighbors to get to know each other and interact with law enforcement in a social setting, said Capt. Scott Riske.

“We wanted to have a bigger event, with a movie in the park,” Riske said. “We want everyone to get to know each other. Sometimes we don’t see our officers because some of them work nights. They can meet, discuss whatever they like to talk about, and it’s more of a social setting. The main goal is for everyone to get to know who their neighbors are.”

The animated movie “Sing” will be featured at 5 p.m., and other events include a bounce house, rock climbing wall, face painting, prizes and hot dogs.

“Last year we had somewhere around 1,000 people,” Riske said. “It would be great if we could build on that each year.”

The following week, residents from Austin County and beyond will celebrate the county fair and rodeo, complete with live music, competitive rodeo events, a livestock show, carnival, food, entertainment and the highly-anticipated crowning of the fair queen. The event is held at the county fairgrounds in Bellville and raises scholarship funds for local youth.

The Sealy Chamber of Commerce’s annual golf tournament – rescheduled from September due to Hurricane Harvey – is now set for Oct. 26 at River Ridge Golf Club.

Bras for a Cause, a raucous good time auctioning decorated brassieres modeled by local male celebrities, is planned for 8 p.m. Oct. 28 at Saddleback Saloon. Proceeds go to the MD Anderson Center for Breast Care at Memorial Hermann.

The month is rounded out with a favorite local family event. Boo Bash, sponsored by The Sealy News, kicks off at 5 p.m. Oct. 31 in downtown Sealy. A haunted house, food, games, a costume contest, live music and more will be among the featured attractions.
