The Faith Academy cross country team traveled to Waco to compete in the TAPPS State Cross Country Meet which was held on Oct. 30. The meet was held at the Cottonwood Creek Golf Course.
Brianna Gallaher, a junior, captured her third consecutive state championship title. Brianna started the two-mile course strong against 63 runners and ran about 3/4 of a mile with a girl on her heels. She started breaking away and extending her lead going into the first mile. Her competitor remained about 50 yards behind her with a mile and a half remaining and Brianna crossed the finish line 13 seconds ahead to win.
The boys team consisted of freshmen Josh Poorman, Luke Potter, Eric Carlin, Taylor Hetzel and juniors Miguel Guerrero and Brody Schiller. They competed their 5K against 13 teams and 97 runners on the rolling slopes of the golf course. Going into the first mile, freshman Josh Poorman ran in about the 20th position. Around the second mile, he started passing runners to work his way up to about 15th. He held his position until 200 meters from the finish line and then opened his stride into a full out sprint and finished ninth.
Poorman was followed by teammate Miguel Guerrero who was 26th, Luke Potter 37th, Eric Carlin 44th, Taylor Hetzel and Brody Schiller. This was Faith Academy's first year to field a boys team and with the help of all six runners, they were able to place fifth in the team standings.
This was a huge accomplishment for the team who has four freshman and two juniors who skipped there sophomore year competing in Cross Country and just returned to run this year.
