With only three new cases of COVID-19 reported in Austin County last week, the number of active cases has dropped to 18 with no new fatalities.
“DSHS (Texas Department of State Health Services) has Austin County at 18 active cases, 502 total and nine fatalities,” County Judge Tim Lapham reported Monday.
Lapham said the numbers are getting close, but not close enough, to get a waiver from the state mask order.
“Several people have asked about the waiver for the mask requirement. The wavier requires 20 or less new cases over the past 14 days. Counting only true positive cases and not probables, we have had 30 new cases over the past 14 days. Sept. 23 had nine new cases. If we can get that number to roll off and not get another big day, maybe we can get to 20. That being said, it doesn’t mean you don’t have to wear a mask anywhere. If a business chooses to require patrons to wear a face covering, that is within their right to do so on their private property.”
