Cougars clean up postseason awards

The Brazos Cougars finished off another outstanding season under head coach Eric Stuessel with a collection of postseason awards for some of the top runners’ achievements.

The girls’ team punched a ticket to state for the 19th time in the last 21 years after a 16th consecutive trip to regionals.

For their efforts in leading that charge to the postseason, Esmeralda Garcia, Rubi Garcia and Makinzy Kneip were named to the Texas Girls Coaches Association Class 2A girls' cross country all-state team. In addition, that trio was also named to the Cross Country Coaches Association of Texas’ (CCCAT) Class 2A girls’ all-region team. The Garcia sisters also collected a CCCAT all-state team bid.

On the boys’ side, Zachary Cortez competed at the state championships for the second year in a row and was honored with a spot on the CCCAT Class 2A all-region team as well.

Not only were the Cougars able to get it done on the course, but a couple of athletes also excelled in the classroom and added academic all-state distinction.

Allie Gonzalez was honored by the Texas Girls Coaches Association and Cross Country Coaches Association of Texas with academic all-state team roster spots as well as a second-team academic all-state credit from the Texas High School Coaches Association (THSCA). Melissa Gonzalez added an honorable mention on the academic all-state team from the THSCA.
