Cougarette volleyball gets nine on all-district

Threes were wild for the Brazos Cougarettes collecting their volleyball all-district postseason awards. Three athletes earned district superlatives, a trio was represented on the all-district first- and second-teams and 13 earned academic all-district.

Head Coach Denyse Fernandez led Brazos back to the playoffs with a second consecutive District 27-2A championship earning the No. 1 seed heading into the postseason. After 3-0 wins over the Kenedy Lions and Granger Lions, the Cougarettes fell to the regional finalist Thrall Bulldogs, finishing as area champions and 9-2 in district play.

Junior Jessica Buford led the Cougarettes’ offensive charge and was named the district’s offensive player of the year helped out by classmate Presley Reyes, who was awarded co-setter of the year honors. In her first action at the varsity level, Haiven Alvarado-Harris proved she belonged even as a freshman and took home the newcomer of the year and will return to extend a playoff streak in Wallis.

On top of that, junior Karlie Marek, sophomore Meagan Demny, and freshman Raelynn Kreuger represented Brazos on the all-district first-team while freshman Jemma Zahradnik and sophomores Laura Durrett and Caitlyn Snedaker took home all-district second-team honors.

The Cougarettes also finished with 13 representatives on the academic all-district team; Jessica Buford, Karlie Marek, Presley Reyes, Sofia Solis, Halie Gonzalez, Meagan Demny, Lizbet Roque, Laura Durrett, Caitlyn Snedaker, Raelynn Krueger, Jemma Zahradnik, Haiven Alvarado-Harris and Mikayla Wrenn.

Despite not having any seniors, Coach Fernandez will return her entire team heading into next year and a climb up in classification, joining 3A-Division II next year with the recent realignment of the University Interscholastic League (UIL).
