Cougar strength earns fourth from Rice

Posted

Both the boys’ and girls’ powerlifting squads from Wallis Brazos finished fourth in the team competition at last Wednesday’s Swamp Strength Invitational 2.0 at Rice Consolidated High School.

The Cougars had two representatives take the top spot in their weight class and one each at second, third, fourth and fifth to compile 25 team points, putting them fourth overall. Ahead of Brazos were only Columbus (35), Rice (29) and Weimar (27) with Hallettsville and La Grange tying for fifth with 18 points each which were ahead of Burton’s 7.

On the girls’ circuit, the Cougarettes had a lifter take first, third and fourth each and had a pair of fifth-place finishers round out the team total to 14 points for a similar fourth-place spot. Rice (60) took the top spot at its host meet ahead of La Grange (39) and Hallettsville (21). Columbus’ lone lifter bombed out and did not factor into the final rankings.

The three Brazos boys who lifted over 1,000 pounds last week all reaped the rewards of their work and entered the top 20 of the regional rankings with a whole month left before the Feb. 29 deadline to qualify for regionals as a top-10 lifter in your weight class.

Joey Townsend’s 1,080-pound day shot him up to 11th in the regional rankings among qualified lifters in the 165-pound weight class, Hayden Pearson similarly jumped to 12th in the 220-pound weight class with a 1,050-pound total and Chase Parr used a 1,085-pound total to check in at 16th in the unlimited weight class.

Not only that, but two others registered lifts that put them inside the top 20 as well. Kody Ressler’s 420-pound deadlift last Wednesday pushed his personal bests over 1,000 total pounds to put himself 15th in the 165-pound weight class. Brandon Maldonado put together his best meet of the season to that point and he walked away with 890 total pounds lifted and an 18th-place position in the region of qualified 148-pound weight class lifters.

On the girls’ side of things, a pair of Cougarettes find themselves in the top 20 this week as well thanks to their performance in Altair last week. Elizabeth Hamilton and Halie Gonzalez finished fourth and fifth at the Swamp Strength 2.0 and checked in at 17 and 19 respectively in the regional rankings with totals of 580 and 575.

Hamilton used a squat of 240 pounds, a bench press of 105 and a deadlift of 235 and Gonzalez registered totals of 245, 85 and 245 across the three lifts to set herself up ahead of the girls’ deadline of Feb. 22 to qualify for regionals.
