Carolyn N. Zapalac

Carolyn Zapalac passed away peacefully with family by her side at her home Wednesday, April 15th, 2020.

Carolyn was born May 23, 1934, in Sealy, TX. She was the daughter of Otto Krampitz and Louise Hintz.

Carolyn lived nearly her entire life of 85 years in Sealy, graduating from Sealy High School where she excelled in academics, band, and sports. In 1953, she was selected the Austin County Fair Queen. As a young adult she moved to Houston to attend the Southwestern Business University. Upon completing her degree, she returned to Sealy and spent her professional career at Citizens State Bank for over thirty years, retiring as an Assistant Vice President.

One of the fun family stories she liked to share is how she met her husband, Louis Zapalac, on the tennis courts. Louis recently had returned to Sealy from serving in the U.S. Marine Corps. They married April 10, 1955, which was Easter Sunday, and enjoyed a wonderful marriage of sixty-five years. Friends and family recently celebrated their anniversary and Louis’ 90th birthday in early March.

Carolyn was a dedicated, humble, and passionate servant of her community. To list a few of her accomplishments, she was the founder of the Sealy Fantasy of Lights Christmas Parade, which continues to this day, and was the chairperson for five years. She served as president of the Sealy Chamber of Commerce and as president and a founding member of the Sealy Historical Society. She was renowned for her regional historical research. Also, Carolyn worked diligently with the American Legion and the Catholic Daughters as a member of the Immaculate Conception Church. She was instrumental in contributing to many historical projects including the renovation of the Sealy Firemen’s Hall.

She loved birding, gardening, and helping Louis with his many wood-working projects.

Carolyn is preceded in death by her parents, and her brother Don Ell and sister Dorothy. Sadly, her son Brian passed in 2006 from cancer at the age of 49.

Her finest attribute was her love and commitment to her family. She is survived by her husband, Louis; Brian’s wife Jamie Zapalac; Steve Zapalac (son) his wife Kim; Beverly Bell (daughter) and her husband Kirk. Grandchildren: Stacy Okonski and her husband Daryl; Leslie Anderson and her husband Brent; Keith Zapalac and his wife Dana; Jordan and Brady Zapalac; Jeff Bell and his wife Rachel; Carrie Bell, and Emily Bell. Great-grandchildren: Brandt, Ally and Tyler (Stacy’s family); Andie, Ford and Shep (Leslie’s family); Brian, Beau, and Austyn (Keith’s family); and Hudson (Jeff’s son). Family always came first to Carolyn. She was a shining light of what it means to be a wonderful wife, parent, grandparent and great grandparent.

A private graveside service was held Saturday, April 18, in Sealy, officiated by Father Eric Pitre. Donations can be made in Carolyn’s memory by mail to the Bellville Turnverein Restoration Project, P.O. Box 672, Bellville, TX 77418, or online at (The dance hall was built by Carolyn’s great grandfather, Joachim Hintz, in 1898); or, The Sealy Historical Society at
