Calvin Lee “Sonny” Sens passed away peacefully at the age of 89, Sunday Dec. 15, 2019, in Sealy. He was born Aug. 2, 1930, to Edwin and Alice Hassler Sens at the family home outside of Sealy.
Despite the learning challenges that he faced throughout his life, Sonny was able to live independently for the 20 years that followed the death of his mother in 1999. Working on the family farm and ranch his entire life allowed Sonny to become very knowledgeable about crops, cattle, seasons and so much more. He was well known for his strength, especially his handshake.
There are a lot of people that have stories attesting to this. He was a long-time member of the Austin County Livestock Association and was a life member of the Austin County Fair. His latter days were spent tending to the chickens, listening to the auction market reports and polka time on the radio, and watching TV favorites like Days of Our Lives, nature shows and political discussions. Sonny enjoyed deer hunting, especially opening weekend, attending the local county fairs to see the rodeos and all of the area barbeques for the cold beer, food, and polka music.
Calvin was preceded in death by his parents, brother Marvie Sens, brothers-in-law Eugene Foehner and Milton Young. He is survived by his sisters Lillie May Foehner and Clara Young, nieces Ronda Landers, Sandi Sens Ward and Vanessa Pearce, nephews Mark Sens and Brad Young.
