Brazos lifters take on Rice

Posted

The powerlifting teams from Brazos High School returned to Altair and Rice Consolidated High School for the Swamp Strength Invitational last Thursday evening and received sizeable contributions across the board.

The nine Cougarette lifters totaled 4,395 pounds lifted which helped score eight team points, earning them a 10th-place finish out of 16 teams. Five registered top-10 finishes and three of those lifters used their totals to jump into the top 20 in the regional rankings as well.

Jemma Zahradnik improved in all three lifts from her last go around and the 55-pound increase that inflated her total to 430 pounds put her second overall in the 105-pound weight class at Rice and bumped her up to No. 18 in the region.

Halie Gonzalez and Elizabeth Hamilton both competed in the 181-pound weight class and similarly saw their totals shoot up from last week’s meet at Rice, 60 pounds for Gonzalez to 635 and 40 pounds for Hamilton to 620, to check in at No. 15 and 17 respectively in the regional rankings.

On the boys’ side, three Cougars finished in the top 10 of their weight class to help Brazos compile six team points, putting them 12th overall. Of the three top-10 finishers, two of them used personal records to get there and climb the regional rankings as well.

Brandon Maldonado turned in his best performance of the year and finished with a total of 955 pounds, good enough for fifth at the meet and No. 11 in the region for qualified lifters in the 148-pound weight class.

Joey Townsend was one of three Cougars to surpass the 1,000-pound mark although he finished 20 pounds shy of his personal record which leaves him at No. 11 in the 165-pound class. The other two Brazos representatives in the four-digit club were Hayden Pearson (1,100 total, 7th in 220) and Chase Parr (1,110 total, 11th in SHW) who used those PRs to jump to No. 12 and No. 17 in the regional rankings for their respective weight classes.

The Cougar strength teams will return to Rice Consolidated for the Raider Booster Club Meet this Saturday, Feb. 15, with time running down to punch a ticket to the regional championships. The girls have until Feb. 22 to crack the top 10 in their weight class while the boys have until Feb. 29.
