Bellville wins game one, Fulshear wins next two

Brahma baseball slots 10 on all-district teams

The Bellville Brahmas got out to a hot start on the diamond in their regional quarterfinal matchup against Fulshear, winning the first game of the best-of-three series, 5-2.

The top-seeded Chargers from District 25-4A bounced back in a major fashion, taking Game 2 by an 8-3 score that needed eight innings to determine a winner. That forced a decisive Game 3 where Fulshear came out on top, 8-4, to reach the regional semifinal to face the La Vernia Bears, winners of District 30.

The Brahmas clinched their sixth consecutive bi-district berth this year and reached the regional quarterfinal for the first time since 2015 where they fell to a West Orange-Stark team en route to a state runner-up finish.

For their efforts of recreating that run from four years ago, the 2019 version of Bellville baseball was well-represented in the District 26-4A awards with a pair of superlative winners and eight more on all-district teams.

The most valuable player in the district was awarded to Kevin Black, who will play at the next level with Wharton County Junior College. He was coached by Jeff Durbin, who was named co-coach of the year with Caldwell’s Kyle Toney, who led the Hornets to a bi-district title over El Campo.

A pair of seniors was complemented by a pair of junior Brahma representatives on the first team. Seniors Tyler Heintschel (pitcher) and Walker Schulz (middle infield) were joined by juniors Carson Baker (outfield) and Grayson Mays (designated hitter) as honorees for their contributions to the playoff run.

On the second team, it was a pair of sophomores that joined another pair of seniors in Sangster McKay (middle infield) and Cody Springer (outfield) ending their careers with second-team all-district honors. Sophomores Kyle Peschel (catcher) and Colby Lange (infield) will return for two more years of Bellville baseball and will look to extend a playoff streak in that time as well.
