A pair of 1-0 teams in district play will clash on the gridiron this Friday night with the Bellville Brahmas playing host to the Giddings Buffaloes in a contest that will feature plenty of running plays.
Both squads have compiled more than 1,000 rushing yards through the first six games of the season, averaging over 200 yards per game and double-digit touchdown totals.
Giddings enters the game 2-4 overall but fresh off a district-opening win over the Caldwell Hornets at home where 137 of the Buffaloes’ yards came on the ground compared to the 101 through the air.
The 21-7 decision in favor of Giddings pushed its point total to 170 on the season, with an average of 28.3 points scored per game, but ran the points-against total to 179 for an average of 29.8 points against per game.
On the other side, Bellville has scored 126 points so far for an average of 21 per game while its opponents have put up 107 for an average of 17.8 points against per game.
Last week, the Brahmas collected a 23-20 win over the Smithville Tigers to grab their first district win and push their overall record to 4-2 thanks to Robert Briggs’ 11-yard score early in the fourth quarter as part of his eight-carry, 85-yard performance on the ground.
Richard Reese carried the ball the most for Bellville, collecting 176 yards on 36 carries, two of which went for scores that tied the game at 7 in the first and took a 14-7 lead for the Brahmas in the second quarter. Quarvante’ Butler added 40 yards on six carries and the trio will look to continue to round out the Bellville ground assault to protect their home turf.
The Buffaloes have yet to win a game on the road in three chances while the Brahmas lost only one of their three home contests so far.
It all gets started this Friday night at 7:30 p.m. at the Pasture of Pain in Bellville. Smithville (0-1) travels to Royal (0-1) and Caldwell (0-1) squares off with La Grange (1-0) serving as the rest of this week’s action from District 12-4A-2.
