Last Saturday’s powerlifting meet at Rice Consolidated High School featured all three of Austin County’s UIL representatives.
The Sealy and Brazos boy teams both had third-place finishers and checked in at 13th and 17th respectively in the team competition. Half of Bellville’s four lifters took the top spot in their weight class but the Brahmas didn’t have enough team members to factor into the team rankings.
On the girls’ side, the Lady Tigers finished eighth in the team rankings thanks to a second-place finisher and two fourth-place lifters while the Cougarettes took 17th, similar to their male counterparts in Wallis, with a third- and fourth-place finisher each.
For the Sealy boys, Juan Perez (114-pound weight class) and Weslee Novosad (132-pound weight class) supplied the third-place finishes with total lifts of 670 and 870 pounds, respectively.
Perez’ total was a 30-pound increase on his previous personal record and it pushed him to No. 6 in the region at his weight class. Novosad added 70 pounds onto his previous record to check in at No. 7 in Region 2 with only a week left before the top 10 from each region are locked in to fill the field that will compete at the Regional Championship in Smithville on March 14.
On the girls’ side, the Lady Tigers were boosted once again by Sabrina Terrill’s total of 830 pounds which served as a 30-pound increase on her season best. Although she added weight to her total, so too did Giddings’ Delaney Turner who finished with 840 pounds at the same meet to overtake Terrill for the top spot in the region in the 259+ pound weight class.
Broccisha Williams (600-pound total in the 132-pound weight class) and Melanie Nieto (685-pound total in the 165-pound class) supplemented Terrill with fourth-place finishes to account for the nine team points. Williams improved by 20 pounds on her season best to move to No. 9 in the region and Nieto jumped up 30 pounds to check in at No. 8 in Region 2.
For Brazos, Joey Townsend eclipsed the century mark in the 165-pound weight class for the third straight meet to take third in the class but improved his season best by 30 pounds to bump himself up to No. 9 in the region.
Jemma Zahradnik and Halie Gonzalez supplied the third- and fourth-place finishes for the Cougarettes, using totals of 465 pounds and 675 pounds. The former added 35 pounds to her best lift of the year and moved to 12th in the region while the latter improved by 40 points and sits at No. 11 in the region with only a week before the girls’ Regional Championship field is set.
All four Bellville lifters joined the comma club, exceeding 1,000 pounds with their totals. Wayne Rinn (1,300-pound total in the 181-pound weight class) and Alex Marek (1,335-pound total in the 198-pound weight class) took the top spot in their respective classes, increasing their season-best marks by 105 and 50 pounds, helping both checking in at the No. 4 spot in the regional rankings.
