Austin County Fair & Rodeo donates to American Cancer Society

Bellville – The Austin County Fair Association donated $2,650 to the American Cancer Society of Austin County on Jan. 23 to represent their participation in the Tough Enough to Wear Pink program.

Fridays are “Tough Enough to Wear Pink” days at the Austin County Fair. Representatives of the American Cancer Society stand at the gates and pass out pink ribbons to everyone wearing pink. In return, the Austin County Fair Association donates a portion of the day’s ticket sales to the American Cancer Society for every pink ribbon handed out. This year’s total donation from the Fair came to $1,000.

Throughout the Fair, the Rodeo Committee selects a bronc and a bull each night to be “Bounty.” That means if the cowboy rides them, they get $100 bonus money. If they do not, the $100 goes to the American Cancer Society. Many of the cowboys decide to donate their Bounty winnings to the American Cancer Society as well. For the 2017 Rodeo, the committee donated $1,650 to the American Cancer Society.

The checks from each group were presented to Caroline Kemper at last Tuesday’s Fair Board meeting.
