Austin County Fair Association announces scholarship winners

Memorial scholarships to provide $62,500 of assistance for graduating seniors

The Austin County Fair Association is pleased to announce the 2020 recipients of the Austin County Fair Scholarships. The Austin County Fair has been awarding scholarships in memory of deceased directors and deceased director’s spouses since 1992. At that time, the Scholarship program originally awarded 6 scholarships in the amount of $1,000 each. Over the years, the Fair Association has been increasing scholarships.

This year, 20 scholarships will be awarded to Austin County students totaling $55,500. When the scholarships that are given to the Queen’s Pageant winners are included, the Austin County Fair Association will give $62,500 in scholarships to graduating high school seniors in Austin County. The Fair Association takes great pride in giving back to these students from our community for their hard work and dedication that they have shown throughout the years.

The Austin County Fair Memorial Scholarships are funded from money raised throughout the year through various activities and the support of the community and dedicated board members. Included in the scholarships awarded are:

  • The Harold Luhn Agricultural Memorial Scholarship which is presented to an exhibitor who will pursue a career in agriculture. Harold Luhn was an active member of the Fair Association and believed that the youth of Austin County world forever be our future. The Harold Luhn Memorial Scholarship is endowed by Chuck & Rita Scianna.
  • The C.W. & Lillie Brandes Agricultural Memorial Scholarships will be awarded to 2 students that will also pursue a career in agriculture and is endowed by their granddaughter, Tracey O’Neil and her husband Jim. C.W. Brandes, with the support of his wife, Lillie, were involved with the Austin County Fair Association since the early 60’s. During that time, Charlie Brandes served as President and Fair Manager.
  • The Ed Michalke Memorial Scholarship will be given in memory of Ed Michalke. Mr. Michalke was a longtime supporter of the Austin County Fair Association since the mid 60’s working with Austin County 4-H and FFA students. For 30 years, Ed Michalke was a familiar face with the Fair Association serving as security for the fair. The Ed Michalke Memorial Scholarship is endowed by the Michalke Family.
  • The Judy Tiemann Memorial scholarship will be awarded to an exhibitor that has been involved in the Calf Scramble program. Judy Tiemann was a director of the Fair Association in 1997-2006 and was the founder of the Austin County Fair Calf Scramble program. Judy began this program in 1990 with the purpose of teaching exhibitors the importance of the beef industry. This program continues to strive to this day because of her dedication to the youth.

The Austin County Fair Association works hard all year committing many countless volunteer hours working towards their goal of continuing to raise scholarships. The Austin County Fair Association will have awarded $839,500 in scholarships since 1992.
