Albert J. Sodolak

Albert J. Sodolak passed away on Dec. 31, 2018 at home in Frydek, Texas. He was born Nov. 14, 1936 in Sealy, Texas to Charles and Julia Hajdik Sodolak. He attended school in Sealy and graduated from Sealy High School in 1956. After graduation, he joined and served in the U.S. Army and Army Reserves.

Albert married Doris Kutra on Aug. 2, 1959. They had two children, Brian and Laura. He worked for 17 years for Cameron Iron Works before leaving in 1975 to start his own business, Austin County Machine Shop. Albert was one of, if not THE, hardest workers at ACMS, even working on the holiday weekend the day before his death.

His community activities included: member of Sealy ISD School Board for nine years; charter member of San Felipe/Frydek Volunteer Fire Department; President of Sealy Little League; Scout Master of Troop 443 where he received the Boy Scouts of America coveted Silver Beaver award; and supporter of Sealy FFA Department and recipient of FFA Honorary Chapter Farmer Award.

A lifetime member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Frydek, Albert could be found at mass nearly every weekend and was one of the most recognizable faces at the annual St. Mary’s Grotto Celebrations every April. Over the years, Albert served the church in many capacities, including: Lecturer, Extraordinary Minister, Parish Council President, Church Celebration Chairman and CYO sponsor.

Other church related activities included: Former Grand Knight of Sealy Knights of Columbus, Charter Grand Knight and Honorary Life member of Frydek Knights of Columbus, Charter Member of Frydek 4th Degree Assembly.

Albert is survived by his wife of 59 years Doris Kutra Sodolak; son Brian Sodolak and wife Diane; daughter Laura Thaxton and husband Richard; and grandchildren Trey and Taylor Bartholomaus, and Danielle and Dylan Thaxton.

He is preceded in death by his parents Charles and Julia Sodolak; sisters Mary Eder and Lillie Manna; and brothers Ludwig J. Sodolak, Sr, and Charlie Sodolak.

Pallbearers were 4th Degree Knights of Columbus, St. Mary’s Assembly members Ludwig Sodolak, Jr., David Ondruch, Bennie Ondruch, Stephen Reichardt, Kevin Cendalski and Henry Mlcak.

Honorary pallbearers were Albert and Doris’s godchildren, in memoriam Lisa Zapalac, Sara Horel, Eric Zapalac, Adam Zapalac, Dominick Sodolak and Steven Kutra.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Albert’s name to St. Mary’s Catholic Church, 10471 Grotto Rd, Sealy, TX 77474.

Visitation was Friday, Jan. 4, from 5 to 7 p.m. at St. Mary’s Catholic Church 10471 Grotto Rd. Sealy, TX 77474 followed by Rosary at 7 p.m. A second vsitation was held Saturday, Jan. 5, from 8 to 10 a.m. followed by the Funeral Mass at 10 a.m., also at St. Mary’s Catholic Church with Fr. Thuy Quang Nguyen officiating. Interment followed at St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery.
