As the football regular season inches closer, the Katy 7-on-7 league that members of the Sealy Tigers have been participating in enters the final week of exhibition play. Last week, Sealy won both of its games over Mayde Creek and Jordan.

Members of the Tigers’ squad have been competing in the passing league hosted by James E. Taylor High School against other Katy ISD teams every Wednesday in June. This week, they were set to meet Taylor and Jordan opponents to wrap up play.

In last week’s competition, Haden Wernecke and Graham Samonte registered second-half touchdowns to lift Sealy over Mayde Creek. In first-half action against Jordan, Wernecke scored twice and Parker DeBerry and Callen Rabius caught touchdown passes to increase the Tiger lead. Bradley Garbs and A’vonte Nunn also hauled in point-after tries to give Sealy a 27-6 halftime lead.

Junior quarterback D’vonne Hmielewski found a classmate in Wernecke multiple times in both games where the receiver dealt further damage with jukes and spins to get away from defenders trying to get him down. The pair will look to replicate the connection on the gridiron with pads when the Tigers play in scrimmages Aug. 12 and 19 before the season-opening game Aug. 27 at home against Brazosport. The district slate will begin Oct. 8 at home against Royal.
