The University Interscholastic League announced its biennial district realignment for football, volleyball and basketball Thursday morning, Feb. 3.

In Class 4A, Sealy and Bellville had one team added to both district groupings where the football district remained in Region III but the volleyball and basketball districts were moved to Region IV.

The Columbia Roughnecks were added to the football district to make a seven-team District 10 and the Needville Blue Jays to the volleyball and basketball districts to make a seven-team District 25.

In Class 3A, Brazos’ football district similarly added only one school, Boling, and remained in Region III to make a seven-team District 14. The volleyball and basketball districts remained the same as the previous realignment and kept the eight teams that make District 24.

Sealy Head Football Coach Shane Mobley said although the Roughnecks are a familiar opponent, the extra team in the group doesn’t make the playoff picture any clearer.

“West Columbia is dropping down from our old district when we were in division one and they’ve got talent year in and year out,” he said Feb. 3. “When you go from six teams teams and you’ve only got four going, now you’ve got seven teams and you only have four going, it just makes it a little bit more important earlier in the season.”

With the addition of a district game, the Tigers are scheduled to play only four non-district contests before district play begins. Mobley said dates, times and sites had still yet to be finalized but Sealy’s 2022 opponents included Brazosport, Smithville, Stafford, Bay City, Columbia, Royal, Bellville, Wharton, Sweeny and La Marque.
