Hello Sealy, I’d like to officially state how excited I am to be covering the local government and news here in Austin County. Now is a great opportunity to watch such a tight-knit community like yours adapt to unprecedented change like growth and development.

From Meet the Teacher to Midnight Madness to First Day of School social media pics, for students and school districts across the region the school year is off to a great start!

Everyone likes to seem smart and sophisticated. It’s why I wear glasses. Instead of saying that I “agree” with someone, I say “I concur.” We all want to come across to the world as fancy, ascot wearing socialites who clear our palates with sorbet between courses.

So, Meet the Teacher was last week. Meet the Teacher is like being at the very top of the rollercoaster. We’re about to plunge down the hill at a rapid pace, flip, turn, and maybe even end up upside down at some point. That’s the best description of a school year I’ve ever heard!

In an attempt to help small towns develop a model for thriving success, many private sector groups and departments of the government have completed studies relevant to growth challenges in small towns.

The real estate market is white-hot right now. As soon as a property hits Zillow, the listing agent enjoys a bidding war above the asking price. In fact, someone stopped by to inquire about the Little Tikes house in our backyard. I had to break the news to the curious couple that our plastic, 20 square foot tiny house property is already under contract and pending inspection. After all, the house’s plastic countertops are so easy to clean.

For those following Coffee and Chaos from the start, I have some updates. First, there were no explosions in my absence last week (though I hear Cat Spring VFD had a truck on standby just in case). More excitedly, when out in my garden picking tomatoes, I discovered a cucumber! I won’t end world hunger with my small garden, but this achievement means I am getting better at being Texan … now if I could just learn to love chicken fried steak and Whataburger.

Events of the past year have demonstrated how many “needs” the city has in order to provide the best taxpayer and customer service possible.

Oh, those crazy -o ending words! What are we going to do with them? Specifically, how do we know how to spell them when they become plural? And how do we make sure we don’t get a misspelled tattoo? Let’s march forward into the mess.
