JOYCE JOHNSTON 1927- 2023

Joyce Irene Schiller Johnston, beloved mom, grandma and great-grandma passed away peacefully at her home with loved ones by her side on March 28, 2023. She was 95. Joyce was born in Sealy, TX on Sept. 11, 1927, to Joseph and Vlasta Janecek Schiller; however, she was reared from infancy by her Uncle Frank and Aunt Mathilda Matyas of Frydek. She had a twin brother and nine other siblings who preceded her in death.

Joyce graduated from Sealy High School in 1945. After graduation, she worked as a telephone operator for Southwestern Bell. She met Edward David “Ed” Johnston at church when he moved to Sealy for work. She married the love of her life on May 15, 1953. The family farm in Frydek became their permanent home where they reared their seven children.

She was a long-time member of the Sealy Presbyterian Church which was founded by her Uncle John Schiller in 1902. She later became a member of New Hope Presbyterian Church in Katy, TX. She was also an honorary member of the San Felipe/Frydek VFD.

After the death of her husband, she began to work outside the home. She worked for Igloo and Ingersoll Rand in Houston and then for Bill’s Supermarket in Sealy until retirement.

Joyce enjoyed cooking and especially baking. Other hobbies included bird watching and gardening. She could often be spotted among her numerous plants and assorted beautiful flowers. She dearly loved all her pets which included a long line of cats and dogs. She even named all her cows and called them by name.

She is survived by her children and their families which includes Frank/Kay Johnston, Carol/Karl Moody, David/Joanie Johnston, Linda Davis, Gloria Sklar, Wilbur Johnston, Nancy/Blake Muirhead, 15 grandchildren, 16 great- grandchildren, brother-in-law Adrian Dowdy, sister-in-law Lorrene Schiller and numerous nieces and nephews.
