The Brazos Cougar football squad dropped its second straight contest last Friday and fell to 1-2 on the season after a 42-0 loss to Burton at Cougar Stadium in Wallis. Brazos looks to get back on track against Weimar (0-3) on the road this Friday.

Before last Friday’s contest on the eve of the terrorist attacks Sept. 11, 2001, every Cougar took the field with an American flag and local first responders joined the captains at midfield for the coin toss on Stars and Stripes night. Local active-duty military and veterans were also honored before kickoff.

Wallis Volunteer Fire Chief Clay Engelbrecht supplied the tossing of the coin on the midfield Cougar logo that was painted in red, white and blue. He was joined by other representatives from Wallis VFD, Wallis Police and Austin County EMS.

The local first responders got a front-row seat to the action but Brazos was unable to get much going offensively and fell behind 21-0 at the halftime intermission. Jeffrey Martinez was a bright spot as he pulled down an interception and supplied strong kickoff returns.

The Cougars hit the road this Friday to face a winless Weimar squad this week although it was the Wildcats who took both meetings when the teams were district foes in the 2018-2019 alignment of the University Interscholastic League.
